Park View Middle School May Get New Name, Veterans Memorial

Mukwonago, Wis. – A major expansion at the Mukwonago Police Department is prompting the relocation of the village’s veterans memorial—and it could also lead to a new name for Park View Middle School.

The Village of Mukwonago Board recently approved a $1.3 million contract with Campbell Construction to build a 4,600-square-foot garage addition to the Mukwonago Police Department. The project includes a new roof for the existing facility and upgrades to surrounding pavement and utilities. However, the expanded footprint means the current Mukwonago Veterans Memorial must be moved.

The image shows a brick building with a parking lot and several police vehicles in front. To the left, a sign labeled “Veteran’s Memorial” stands on a grassy lawn with American flags and landscaping. Trees, residential buildings, and a radio tower are visible in the background under a clear blue sky.

Proposed Park View Veterans Memorial Location

Mukwonago Area School District (MASD) officials have proposed relocating the memorial to a high-visibility spot outside the entrance of the new Park View Middle School building, which is scheduled to open for the 2026–2027 school year. The district is working with the Mukwonago American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) on the design and features of the new memorial site.

The layout includes labeled areas for new construction (in blue), renovation (in yellow), parking lots, athletic fields, and outdoor play zones. A red star in the top left marks the "Proposed Memorial Location" near the entrance from Highway 83 and East Veterans Way. The site also includes designated parent drop-off, visitor parking, and event/staff parking areas, with streets, surrounding homes, and nearby facilities visible in the aerial view.

Plans for the relocated memorial include a permanent flag display, and electrical service for lighting. There will also be designated access for the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) to host events.

Any Added Cost to Park View Project?

During the May 12, 2025 School Board meeting, officials discussed how the proposed veterans memorial would be incorporated into the pre-existing design of the school’s main sidewalk entrance. MASD Superintendent Joe Koch explained, “This [the sidewalk entrance design] was designed prior to the conversation with the VFW and American Legion.” School Board President Dale Porter added, “We offered them to come in and help with the design of it but obviously they [VFW/American Legion] would have to pay for whatever additions that are going to be to our drawings.”

The proposed addition includes a stone memorial honoring veterans, along with plaques representing each branch of the military. However, MASD Superintendent Joe Koch clarified, “that is separate from what we’re doing from a referendum standpoint; a school construction standpoint.”

Park View Middle School Name Change Proposal

With the memorial set to become a symbolic centerpiece of the new school’s entrance, MASD is now considering renaming the school in honor of veterans.

In a memo to the School Board dated May 9, Director of Business Services Tom Karthausser recommended the name Veterans Memorial Middle School as a fitting tribute. The building’s address—East Veterans Way—further supports the idea.

“This creates an opportunity to rename the school,” Karthausser wrote. “With consideration to relocating the Mukwonago veterans memorial…this name is worthy of consideration.”

The School Board may also explore other name ideas or opt to keep the current name, Park View Middle School. Community feedback is expected to play a role in the final decision. When asked if the school board would be open to surveying the community for alternate name ideas, Porter said, “100% what we should do is involve the community. They’re paying for it.”

Discussions are ongoing, with a decision likely to come before the school’s grand opening in 2026.
